A First Door Through Software

From humble beginnings in Los Angeles, Kevin Michael Segal found an early commercial talent in software design. While still in middle school, he built websites for clients he found on Craigslist. That work connected an idea with a person who needed something tangible: a business represented, a service explained, or an experience made usable. It established a habit that continues through his work across physical and digital systems, translating another person's ambition into something that can be seen, examined, and used.

Learn By Building The Mechanism

In seventh grade, Segal built a hovercraft for the science fair. He later created a plastic-bottle recycling system that turned discarded material into printable filament. The projects joined curiosity with the practical work of making equipment behave as intended. They also introduced a relationship that remains central to his interests: a material can become a resource, a machine can become a tool for another machine, and a problem can reveal a new way to connect systems that were previously treated separately.

Study The Object And The Space

Studies in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, and Product Design gave Segal complementary ways to examine what he wanted to build. Architecture considers the scale of a place and the experience of the people using it. Mechanical engineering follows the physical relationships that allow equipment to work. Product design connects function, form, and human interaction. His interests move between those scales, with the same attention directed toward a sensor, an interface, a fabrication machine, or a building system intended to support everyday life.

Build An Experience Around The Audience

Throughout childhood, Halloween became a setting for immersive experiences. Scenery, light, sound, automation, and narrative offered ways to transform a familiar environment into another world. That interest continued into art direction, overseeing production and editing for numerous startups, and a personal passion for photography. The work connects observation with composition: understanding what someone will notice, how a sequence will unfold, and how physical equipment and digital media can support the same moment without losing the purpose of the experience.

Make The Tools By Hand

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Segal designed and built the first Segal CNC and laser-cutting machines by hand in his parents' garage. Working across the frame, motion system, and control software connected the full machine in a direct way. His home automation work followed a similar instinct, including sensors and equipment developed for his own use and later for private residential and commercial clients. These experiences grounded his interest in making the tools that allow a larger system to exist and remain understandable to its user.

Carry The Instinct Into Larger Systems

Segal's pursuits now extend through building-grade 3D printers, large-scale drone shows, autonomous piloting software, and financial infrastructure for stablecoin-to-fiat adoption and private cryptocurrency transfers. His background as a certified drone pilot connects an interest in flight with the responsibilities of operating equipment. His maternal Philippine ancestry gives his pursuit of modernization there a personal dimension. Across these fields, the ambition remains connected to those earlier projects: build, understand the interfaces, and use that understanding to pursue something at a larger scale, on Earth and in space.
