OptiLink points, acquires, and carries the data. The network routes around weather and around which ground site can see the spacecraft.
An optical link depends on acquiring and maintaining a precise line of sight between moving endpoints. Pointing, tracking, optical power, thermal behavior, and network scheduling therefore belong in one design. The terminal is evaluated as part of the larger communications path and its operating conditions.
