Pathfinder plans and flies when the communications delay is too long for continuous control.

A distant spacecraft cannot depend on a continuous conversation with Earth. Observation planning, navigation, power management, and recovery need an onboard role alongside the communications plan. Pathfinder connects those functions to the instruments and the environment of the proposed exploration mission.

    The probe carries the plan and the limits it must stay inside.
